Saudi Man Employed By Hai’a Has 6 Wives: 3 Are Yemenis Of Which Two Are Illegal

My sister-in-law told me about this last night and I thought it must have been a joke until I saw it today in Arab News. How did a man working for the Hai’a NOT know it was haram to have more than four wives?

Update on this story: The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Hai’a) Thursday denied reports that the 56-year-old man charged and convicted of marrying more than four wives is a commission agent. Instead, a Hai’a spokesman said, the man was a security guard of a Hai’a precinct in Masarha, Jazan.

SAUDI SENTENCED FOR SIX WIVES
By ARAB NEWS | Jeddah
17 February 2010

A court in Al-Masarha in Jizan region has sentenced a 56-year old Saudi employee of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (the Hai’a) to 120 lashes for being married to six wives at the same time, 20 lashes per wife.

He has been ordered to memorize two chapters of the Holy Qur’an. The court also banned him from traveling abroad for five years and delivering sermons or leading prayers in mosques. The accused had claimed he did not know it was against Islamic law to have more than four wives at the same time. He told the judge that he had no education beyond elementary school.

He faced the possibility of being stoned to death, a sentence applied in Islam against married men and women for adultery. Under Sharia rules, a man may marry up to four wives. However, the judge in the case, Sheikh Salman bin Yahya Al-Wadaani, said there was insufficient evidence to apply the Had Al-Zina (the sentence for adultery), according to Al-Watan daily.

The man was charged originally in June 2008 after he was reported for having three Saudi and three Yemeni wives. It also emerged during investigations that two of his Yemeni wives were resident illegally in the Kingdom.

The judge said there would be a separate case against him for marrying foreign women without official consent. No Saudi man or woman wishing to marry a foreigner may do so without approval from the Ministry of Interior.

  1. >I agree with you – it seems impossible that he would not know. Even in elementary school, Saudis receive a basic education re Islam. :S I'm glad to see that he is being punished though. Too often we read about women being physically punished for smaller crimes so at least this is somewhat of a step in the right direction. I hope that the "extra" wives will be taken care of though.

  2. >I think his punishment should have been much more than what he got. Lets add lying to the list… he didn't know 4 wives was the max.. pulease!!!!! I don't get it, from my understsnding the hai'a don't get a good salary, not even enough to give one wife a decent life… how could he afford 6???

  3. >I imagine the two illegal wives will be kicked out of the country and possibly face a punishment as well. I am not sure of the Islamic education one gets in middle school but surely they must touch on marriage in middle school. If his parents did not go to school then surely he must have been taught Islamic education in the masjid. Don't Saudi kids (at least boys) go to masjid for Islamic education? How is it possible that the other two wives did not know he already had four wives (maximum number allowed in Islam) unless all his wives are children/teenage drop outs or uneducated?

  4. >Ladies- Its like the hai'a don't talk about having four wives and he's never overheard them discussing t it or in a khutbah at the masjid. And should we assume he's never read about it…even a single passage in the Qur'an including the verses that mention having four wives. Or is that he has some messed up notion that since the Prophet (peace be upon him) had 9 wives then he can have that many?Either the judge officiating over his case is getting played or he's covering for him and Allah knows best.

Instead, a Haia spokesman said, the man was a security guard of a Haia precinct in Masarha, Jazan.“The accused was neither a field employee nor an administrator in the Haia but rather a building security man,” Abdul Mohsen Al-Qifari, director of public relations for the Riyadh-based General Presidency of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, said in a statement. Al-Qifari said the Haia had been responsible for investigating and pursuing charges against the man. He was arrested in July 2008. The man, who has not been identified publicly, was sentenced by a court in this southern town to 120 lashes and ordered to memorize chapters of the Holy Qur’an. He has also been prohibited from leaving the country for five years or delivering sermons and leading prayers in mosques.“By dealing with this case the Haia is sending a clear message that it will not favor or spare anyone who breaks the divine laws,” the spokesman said in his letter. The convicted man was married to three Saudi women and three Yemenis who were reportedly illegal residents. The man said in court that he had no idea that Islam prohibited marrying more than four wives. However, at the time of his arrest he had denied the charges saying that he had already divorced two of his wives.Capital punishment was removed from the case once it was determined that the man was not an adulterer, however he faces charges of being illegally married to non-Saudis without permission from the Interior Ministry.

  8. >Tuttie- I'm sure when Saudi men get together, having another wife (or up to four wives) is one of the topics they talk about. It would be shocking if this man claims he never overheard or participated in that kind of conversation. Jerry M- Welcome to FHWS and thanks for commenting. I also wonder if they could have been sold by their family for a small dowry or just satisfied with the maintenance they got from this man, etc. A s*x addiction crossed my mind too, may Allah forgive me if I'm wrong.
