Shoura Council Proposal: Saudis Can Now Marry GCC Nationals

“The members said that family is the nucleus of society and a stable and secure family would contribute to the development of society according to Islamic law.”

Very nice of them to admit that [insert sarcasm]. So now the people benefiting from this new proposal will have a secure and stable family while the other people not benefiting from this will still be under the oppressive law of having to get the Saudi marriage permission and will only achieve this secure and stable family after the approval which would be after suffering for how long? And some will never be approved after a short or long term of waiting.

On the bright side, hopefully this will partially solve the problem of “spinsterhood” amongst Saudi women. Those non-Saudis who have been living in a GCC country for a long period of time and would like to marry a Saudi, should now consider applying for citizenship of that GCC country.

Oh and congrats are in order for Morocco and Jordan, my husband told me these two countries have been approved to become members of the GCC. This would mean – you guessed it – that Moroccans and Jordanians would be able to marry Saudis without restrictions and the Saudi marriage permission would be waived for them.

The Shoura Council on Monday discussed the draft marriage law put forward by a special committee appointed by the council.

The committee, which met 18 times, made a proposal containing 12 articles that outlined the social, cultural, environmental and religious impact on Saudi men marrying non-Saudi women and Saudi women marrying non–Saudis.

The proposal allows Saudi men and women to marry nationals from the Gulf countries since they belong to the same religion and are supported with identical cultures.

Shoura Council Secretary-General Muhammed Al-Ghamdi said that realizing the consequence of such marriages, the council would also seek advice and assistance from government and nongovernmental organizations in finalizing the final draft of the marriage law. The members said that family is the nucleus of society and a stable and secure family would contribute to the development of society according to Islamic law.
